Dithionite is used in conjunction with complexing agents (e.g. citric acid) to reduce iron(III) oxy-hydroxide to soluble iron(II) compounds and to remove amorphous iron(III)-containing mineral phases in soil analyses.
Due to its reducing effect, sodium dithionite is used as a bleaching agent in stain removers, as well as for bleaching sugar and syrup. It is also used to separate silver from fixing baths.
In electroplating, sodium dithionite is used as a reducing agent in waste water treatment.
An important area of application for sodium dithionite is the textile industry. Here it serves as a reducing agent in vat dyeing, e.g. in indigo dyeing.
