General information

The term amide is used in chemistry for compounds that can be formally derived from the basic substance ammonia. In the case of amides, individual atoms or groups of atoms in the ammonia have been replaced by other compounds. There are two types of amides, covalent and ionic amides. In the case of covalent amides, one or more H atoms of the ammonia have been replaced by an organic or inorganic acid, while ionic amides are salts of the ammonia, which are often linked to metal cations. Amides and amines can both be derived from the starting substance ammonia.

Areas of application

Industrially important amides are, for example, Dimethylamide, N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone and Sodium amide.

Dimethylformamide (DMF), more precisely N,N-Dimethylformamide, is an amide of Formic acid. DMF is used as a polar, aprotic, organic solvent. In chemical engineering, it is used as an extractant to separate benzene, ethyne, 1,3-butadiene and as an additive in kerosene to catalyze its combustion.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is often used as a solvent because of its thermal stability and high polarity. It is suitable as a solvent for polymers such as acrylates, epoxides, polyurethanes, polyvinyl chloride, polyimides, polyamideimide. Due to its good solvent properties, it is also used to remove paint. Technically it is used in the production of PU foam.
