Sulfoxides are a class of chemical compounds containing organically bound sulfur. its simplest representative is dimethyl sulfoxide, which is used as a solvent.

Areas of application

DMSO is a widely used solvent in the laboratory and in technology, and is used, among other things, as a stripping agent, as a solvent in aromatics extraction and as a reaction medium in organic syntheses. DMSO has a very high dissolving power, so that a large number of inorganic salts can also be dissolved in it.

It is also a component of spinning solutions for the production of polyacrylonitrile, an important raw material for carbon fibers.
