General information

Dialcohols (dihydric alcohols) derived from ethylene glycol are referred to as glycols. Examples are ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. In addition, derivatives of ethylene glycol, such as. B. methyl glycol (ethylene glycol monomethyl ether) and other diols whose hydroxyl groups are not arranged vicinally, such as trimethylene glycol or neopentyl glycol, referred to as glycols.

Areas of application

Glycole finden sich oft in Kühl- und Frostschutzmitteln sowie Enteisern, da der Gefrierpunkt mit −10 bis −15 °C unter dem von Wasser liegt. In Verbindung mit Wasser liegt der Gefrierpunkt noch deutlich tiefer und kann je nach Mengenverhältnis bis −55 °C erreichen.

Darüber hinaus finden glycolhaltige Flüssigkeiten Verwendung in Bremsflüssigkeit, sowie Propylenglycol-Wasser-Gemische in Nebelfluids für Nebelmaschinen. Industriell werden Glycole allem als Lösungsmittel und Additive für Lacke, Farben und Reinigungsmittel eingesetzt. Ein weiteres Einsatzgebiet ist die Offshore-Erdölgewinnung. Hier wird Triglycol wird zum entfeuchten genutzt. Auch in verschiedenen Zahnpasten sind Glycole zu finden.
