General information

Activated carbon is combustible and consists mainly of carbon (usually > 90%) with a highly porous structure. The pores are open-pored and interconnected like a sponge. The inner surface area is between 300 and 2000 m2/g carbon, so the inner surface area of four grams of activated carbon corresponds roughly to the area of a soccer field. Activated charcoal is used in granulated or pressed tablet form (charcoal compacts). It also serves as a support material for catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis.

Areas of application

Activated carbon is used as an adsorbent in chemistry, medicine, drinking water treatment, waste water treatment, ventilation and air conditioning, among other things. It also serves as a support material for catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis.

Activated carbon is primarily used as an adsorbent to remove unwanted color, flavor and odor from gases, vapors and liquids. A major advantage of activated carbon is its ability to be thermally reactivated. Biological reactivation is also possible with activated carbon used for wastewater treatment.

It is usually used when biological processes, precipitation and flocculation do not lead to satisfactory results. Examples of this are the cleaning of partial flows in industry and the adsorption of dyes from wastewater from the textile industry.
