A mixture of acyclic alkanes (saturated hydrocarbons) is used as paraffin. Paraffins are fluid, oily or waxy, flammable, odorless and tasteless, non-toxic and electrically insulating, water-repellent, can be melted together with fats and waxes and are inert to many chemicals.

Areas of application

The possible uses of paraffin are very diverse due to its properties and non-toxicity. One of the areas of application is the use as a fuel. Here it is used, for example, in candles, oil lamps, grill lighters and as a solid propellant for hybrid rockets.

In addition, it is used for sealing, care and preservation.
