Petroleum is a liquid mixture of hydrocarbons obtained from crude oil by fractional distillation. The properties of petroleum depend on its exact chemical composition and can vary greatly.

The petroleum fraction in petroleum distillation is in the boiling range between petrol and diesel fuel from around 175 °C to 325 °C.

Areas of application

Petroleum is commercially available as a cleaning agent and solvent for a wide range of applications, e.g. as penetrating oil. offered and sold as petroleum or penetrating oil. Petroleum products are very pure and contain no heavy fractions that would leave residue.

Furthermore, petroleum is used as a lubricant for precision slide-bearing spindles, e.g. B. on surface grinders. Thin-bodied universal oils with penetrating properties such as Caramba and WD-40 also mainly contain petroleum.
