Corrosion inhibitors are chemical products that, when added to water or other process fluids, slow the rate of corrosion. They are normally classified as: anodic, cathodic, film forming and oxygen scavengers depending on their mode of action. The effectiveness of most anti-corrosion agents is significantly influenced by the chemical properties of the water and physical conditions such as temperature and flow rate.
Process water is often used as an energy source. In the water circuits of heating and air conditioning systems and in closed cooling circuits, for example, the high heat storage capacity of the process water is used to transport heat energy. To protect against corrosion, an inhibitor is added to the process water, which binds the oxygen in the water. This is then no longer available to the metal as a reaction partner.
The use of drinking water-suitable corrosion inhibitors based on phosphate and silicate to ensure perfect drinking water quality has been used successfully in drinking water distribution for decades to avoid rusty water problems and turbidity in a high proportion of unprotected steel and cast iron pipes. The effectiveness of the inhibitors is determined by the corrosion properties of the material to be protected, the type and concentration of the inhibitors, the operating conditions and the composition of the drinking water, i. H. its chemical corrosion properties.
Effective cooling water treatment therefore always starts with a water analysis and a check of the metallurgy of the system, the system design and the materials used. Only then can effective anti-corrosion agents be selected.
In the past, hydrazine was used very often for corrosion protection. However, since hydrazine is very toxic and suspected of being carcinogenic, its use is subject to strict rules. Today it is used almost exclusively for steam generation in power plants. For this reason, we no longer offer hydrazine to our customers.
