General information

Naphthenes are a group of cyclic, saturated hydrocarbons. Furthermore, in petrochemistry, naphthene is the common name for cycloalkanes occurring in petroleum, such as cyclopentane and cyclohexane, and their alkyl derivatives. Naphthenes are poorly soluble to insoluble in water. They are highly flammable but relatively inert.

Industrially important naphthenes include cyclohexane and methylcyclohexane.

Areas of application

In the chemical industry, cyclohexane is used to produce other cyclic compounds such as cyclohexene, cyclohexanol or cyclohexanone. The last two are important raw materials for the production of nylon. In addition, it is used in many ways as a solvent, e.g. in paints, resins and stain removers.

Generally, methylcyclohexane is used as an organic solvent with properties similar to related saturated hydrocarbons such as heptane. Methylcyclohexane is used as a solvent for rubber, chlorinated rubber, synthetic rubber, polystyrene and cellulose ester, and as a solvent it is the basis of a large number of correction fluids.
